Out of Place: a creative writing workshop with Maestra Cherrie Moraga

Maestra Cherrie MoragaWorkshop Overview:

Techniques presented in these three days are intended to help community-based writers cultivate and maintain a do-able writing practice by following, to some degree, methods Maestra Moraga herself has found useful in her more than thirty-five years of practice.  She will offer exercises and opportunities for writing that emphasize the body as the reservoir of knowing.  Her teaching process is designed to help participants locate that “place” from which their original voice, vision and story may emerge.

To that end, this three day workshop (beginning on Friday evening and continuing until Sunday early evening) will include the following:  Daily writing exercises, group feedback sessions, movement and meditation practice in writing, a dawn ceremony, and evening readings by workshop participants.

Meals, Transportation and Housing
Tea, coffee, and healthy snacks will be provided each day, along with lunch. Information on local restaurants for dinner options will also be provided.

Out of town attendees are asked to secure their own accommodations and transportation.

How to Apply for the Workshop

In your natural writing voice and in a personal letter (250-500 words) to Maestra Moraga, which begins, “Dear Maestra (Teacher),” please reflect on and respond to the following considerations:

1. As a writer, how do you respond to the theme “Out of Place?”
Consider this either (or both) as a physical geography or perhaps for you “out of place” means dis-location or emotional exile.
In whatever manner you resound to this theme, describe that location in a short personal reflection piece as best you can. Put a living picture to it.  Let Maestra Moraga know how/what the “place” means to you.
2. What is the greatest obstacle to your writing process?
3. What one thing would you like to achieve through your writing process?
4. What motivates you to show up for this workshop at this moment in your life?
In your application, please indicate whether or not you have taken or applied for a creative writing workshop with Maestra Moraga in the past.  If so, please indicate when.

Writers must be 23 years old or over to apply.
